The Administration of the State, prepared to act against potential conflict situations by snow in Red Road (12/11/2009)

In the previous season are used more than 536 tonnes of fluxes and over 355,000 liters of brine

Snowplow trucks traveled over 7,700 kilometers

For this campaign, 2,500 tons of flux prepared and tested the GPS in all vehicles.

The Government delegate, Rafael González Tovar, and the Head of State Highway Demarcation, Angel García Garay, presented today at the White means by which the Operating Plan Coordination with snowfall of the State Highway Network in Region of Murcia.

For the coordination of its implementation have attended this meeting as members of the Plan of Civil Protection Unit of the Government Office, the Civil Guard, the State Highway Demarcation in Murcia, the Meteorological Agency and the Military Unit Emergency.

Dedicated media storage fluxes

Tovar Gonzalez recalled that "although there is a Protocol for Coordinated Proceedings of the bodies of the Central Government to snow and other extreme weather conditions in the State Highway Network, which is operating continuously, the possibility that incidence occurring in the State Road Network because of the snow or cold temperatures that lead to the appearance of ice sheets is concentrated in the period from early November to late March, "and added that "over these five months, the Central Government shall provide the roads and their users a series of human and material resources that will deal with emergencies that may arise from heavy snowfall episodes" which are the following.

7 snowplow trucks with six-wheel drive and fitted flux spreader and snow plow.

2 vehicles Unimog multi dozing.

2 storage fluxes of 300 m2 and a third of 100 m2, with a total collection of 2,500 tons.

salt.

Two silos of salt, 100 and 10 tons.

3 brine tanks of 10,000 l

2 extenders brine of 10,000 l

3 fixed weather stations and 2 mobile

As for the vehicles involved in winter maintenance tasks, the government delegate pointed out that "all are equipped with GPS tracking devices and AWD that allow remote operation of the spreader fluxes from central control, so that the driver is engaged solely in the driving of the vehicle and to optimize the frost treatment in areas that really need it. "

In addition, plants of salt and brine are placed strategically in the sections that are more frequent episodes of snow, in order to reduce the recharge time of snow and optimal management.

Tuning

Under the Plan of the tasks was the review and completion of winter maintenance equipment available for its proper operation in the operation phase, as recommended by the manufacturers at all levels (oiled, replacement hoses, performance testing of hydraulic systems, etc).

Have also been prepared stocks of flux until all 2,500 tons, and tested the GPS in all vehicles.

Treatments on the road

On treatments carried out on the road when the weather is adverse, González Tovar noted that are two types: "pre-emptive when no snow has begun, and healing, when it has already occurred, but To prevent the snow turned into ice sheets. "

The preventive treatment consists of extended, between 5 and 15 g/m2 of salt or brine, depending on the humidity of the pavement, on all road sections where there is a humidity higher than 75% and involves a decrease temperature below 0 degrees.

Usually these treatments are performed in the evening, takes place before the temperatures drop overnight.

Curative treatments are more aggressive and consist of the spread between 20 and 40 g/m2 of fluxes in the snow, in order to lower the freezing point and prevent the appearance of ice sheets, which are the extreme danger circulation.

The normal flux is sodium chloride, although when the temperature drops below 5 degrees below zero, it is necessary to mix calcium chloride with the salt to make more effective the treatment.

With a view to enhancing long-lasting action of the fluxes on the road and prevent the wheels of the vehicle projecting outside the road, water is added to salt to form brine which adhere better to the pavement.

The action of the fluxes are complemented by the work of the plows, which are mounted on the same truck spreader, which is moving at a speed of 60 km / h, and prevents the accumulation of snow on the road.

Previous season

Preventive treatment against ice and snow events that took place the previous season were used more than 536.5 tons of sodium chloride (common salt) and 355,250 liters of brine, covering over 7,709 kilometers with snowplow trucks.
